• In The Classroom

As part of our TIA-Level IV Teacher Spotlight series, YES Prep is proud to highlight educators whose dedication and expertise strengthen our mission every day. This week, we shine a spotlight on Jennifer Crancer, AP Art and middle school art at YES Prep Southeast Secondary, who has spent four years inspiring students to embrace their identity, their voice, and their future.

For Jennifer Crancer, teaching has always been about helping others see what’s possible, often before they can see it themselves. Now entering her 24th year in education and her 15th year at YES Prep Southeast Secondary, Jennifer continues to inspire students through creativity, connection, and unwavering belief in their potential.

“My desire to help others has always been at my core,” she shares. “My thought was doing that through my art.” That vision shifted the moment she stepped into a classroom. “I did not think I would be a teacher until I stepped into a classroom and fell in love with the energy. Now I could not imagine myself doing anything else.”

Inspired by Kindness, Driven by Belief

Jennifer credits her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Ashbridge, as one of her earliest inspirations, an educator whose kindness and lifelong dedication left a lasting impression. That example continues to guide her work today as she strives to create classrooms where students feel supported, capable, and valued.

At the heart of her teaching philosophy are empathy and patience. “Knowing that all students truly want success, we just need to find that determination,” she explains. In art, that determination often reveals itself naturally. “A class like Art is subjective and allows students to show their feelings through their work. It truly is magical to watch students come out of their shell, showing them that they can do this.”

Art as a Pathway to Confidence

Whether she’s teaching AP Art, middle school art, or serving as a grade-level chair, Jennifer holds her students to high standards while creating space for exploration and self-expression. Her goal is simple but powerful: “I want them to feel worth their while and to accomplish things they did not know was possible.”

That approach has earned national recognition. Jennifer was named Artsonia Teacher of the Year, a prestigious honor awarded to only 15 teachers nationwide, an affirmation of her commitment to elevating student voice and celebrating creativity at the highest level.

Teaching Beyond the Classroom

Some of Jennifer’s most meaningful moments have come from teaching entire families over the years – siblings, cousins, and multiple generations walking through her classroom. “Watching and getting to know the entire family has been so transformative,” she says. “They truly become a part of why I do what I do.”

Those relationships reinforce her belief in YES Prep as a community-centered organization. Having taught in other districts across Texas, Jennifer says YES Prep stands apart. “YES Prep is the only place that truly feels like a place for students to grow in a way that empowers them to give back to their communities.”

A Place That Heals and Inspires

As she reflects on her journey, Jennifer describes YES Prep as a place of purpose. “This place has the power to heal and the power to inspire all our students and staff,” she shares. “It has been such a wonderful journey, and I am so fortunate that my journey through education is happening here.”

Through art, empathy, and high expectations, Jennifer Crancer continues to open doors for students, helping them discover confidence, creativity, and the belief that they are capable of more than they ever imagined.
